Everyone loves a wedding cake – a beautifully designed sweet work of art, it’s the centerpiece of every wedding reception.
For 2016 we are seeing some fun trends when it comes to wedding cakes. The naked cake (a cake without any frosting or fondant) has been popular for a few years, but 2016 brings a new take on that trend – the crumb coat or half-dressed cake. Essentially it’s a cake with a very thin crumb coat of frosting where the layers of the cake still show through. It’s a more dressed up version of its rustic counterpart.
Another huge trend is the colour dripped cake, where liquid frosting, caramel or ganache is poured over the top of the cake and allowed to drip down the sides. Not only is it pretty, but it looks absolutely delicious! We are also seeing a lot of gold leaf being used on cakes, as well as marbleized fondant. Incorporating geometric patterns for a more modern and contemporary look is also very popular.
Of course the little one-tier cakes are a huge trend right now as well with brides incorporating two or three smaller cakes into their sweet table instead of one large cake.
